About Matthew

My commitment to the practice of civil engineering began in 2020, as a second bachelors student in the Environmental Resources Engineering major at Cal Poly Humboldt. This new path was my second career pivot since 2012, and looking back I can say it was worth the effort. What attracted me to this interdisciplinary field is the ability to apply my background in earth sciences to large-scale civil projects, while improving my engineering judgement.

By June 2024, I completed a M.S. in GeoSystems Engineering and started working as a Staff Engineer. I now have two years of experience assisting senior engineers in civil works projects, specializing in infrastructure, earthwork, and geotechnical analysis. My skills include field geological exploration, laboratory soil testing, site characterization, engineering plan review, Quality Control in construction, and technical writing. In the next five years, I plan to expand my interdisciplinary competence to include construction management for water resources infrastructure projects such as detention basin and grading design, dam retrofits/removals, and watershed restoration projects.

Outside of work I enjoy visiting parks, camping, SCUBA diving, surfing, long-distance swimming, ultimate frisbee, and multisport events. I also enjoy staying current in environmental restoration projects related to water resources management.
